How These Calculations Work

FIRE Number

FIRE Number = Annual Retirement Spending / Safe Withdrawal Rate

The core FIRE formula. If you spend $50,000/year in retirement and use a 4% safe withdrawal rate, your FIRE number is $1,250,000.

Annual Portfolio Growth

FV = Current Assets + Annual Contributions + (Balance + Contributions/2) * Return Rate

Each year, your portfolio grows by your contributions plus the return earned on the average balance during the year.

Savings Rate

Savings Rate = Annual Savings / Annual Income * 100%

The percentage of your income you save annually. Higher savings rates dramatically reduce your time to FIRE.
